The assignment given to me today was to describe the setting in the old black white film and the new film made in the modern time. The somnambulist was the old black and white film and the setting was very unrealistic. The background was not in portion and 2d. The setting for the modern movie four feathers was very big, classy and nice. I personally enjoyed the old film setting because I love art and love how they designed the background to grab your attention. In the modern film the setting doesn’t necessarily have to grab your attention because you are deprived from color and the character’s voices. However, for the old film there is no color and there are no long dialogues due to the lack of technology. Therefore the actors must overreact for the audience to fully understand the emotion getting from each character and makeup must be enhanced. The setting in an old film is a very important aspect of the film because it is black and white it must be extra creative to catch the audience’s attention. Another thing i loved about the old film’s background was how playfully aligned it was with the background music. It was a very playful, playhouse setting where nothing is correct, everything is in irregular shapes and angles. The setting has definitely done a great job in catching the audience’s attention. The 2d background setting has done a great job in creating a sense of aura to inform the audience to feel a certain way just as the movie would want the audience to feel; scared, sad, happy etc., In the modern movie (maybe because I’m very used to it) the setting is very great but because we are not color blind nor deaf in modern movies there wasn’t too much thought into creating background but selecting a background to make the movie as realistic as possible. I thought both settings were very great but personally enjoyed the old film and have given it more credit due to the lack of technology and the effort to express feeling through 2d work of art.
